What is Oral History?
Oral history creates permanent records of institutional, community, and individual histories. Recorded on audio or video tape, interviews are conducted by informed interviewers. The interview is an opportunity to reflect on and interpret events of the past from the perspective of the present. The resulting memories, stories and reflections can be preserved for future use by scholars and researchers, or they can be put to work immediately for commemorative, promotional, or fundraising purposes.
